Bayfield Heritage Days Sheep Trailing

5k Fun Run, Sheep, Parade, Kids Activities

By Ashleigh Bennett Publisher Macaroni KID Durango - Serving Bayfield, Ignacio, Durango's - Family Fun September 27, 2024

Bayfield Heritage Days is definitely a hit every September. The joke is the only traffic jam you will get in in Bayfield will be the sheep and there is no telling when they will be on the road other than tomorrow at 9!

Bayfield Heritage Days celebrates the ranching heritage that is still thriving in Bayfield. J Paul Brown drives the sheep up to the high country in the Spring and then drives them back down to his property south of Ignacio in the Fall.

Though this is the highlight of the day for littles the committee running Heritage Days now has really amped up this day and it is quickly becoming a great family fun community celebration.

The day starts with cinnamon rolls and coffee at the Calvary Presbyterian church at 7am followed by a fun run at 8am and then the people line the sidewalk of buck highway to watch the sheep parade through in a quick 5-10 minute procession. Kids of all ages and adults too have smiles ear to ear, pointing at all the different sizes, colors and silly sounds that come with the trailing of the sheep.

After the sheep head on through then a parade down Mill Street begins led by Bayfield High School Marching Band and a few floats with candy of course! All to end up at the park that is full of festivities including:

  • Sheep Shearing
  • Bounce House
  • Rodeo Grounds Fun
  • Vendors
  • Hayrides
  • Corn Hole
  • Live Music
  • More!

Most of the activities are typically free or very low cost. Come join in the tradition of ranching heritage at Bayfield Heritage Days.

Where to See the Sheep

Where to See: The best place to watch the sheep is along the sidewalk of the Buck Highway (CR 521).

Where to Park: Best places to park are d

  • By the Lion's Hall
  • At Bayfield Early Education Program and walk down the walking path
  • The First Baptist parking lot on the hill above Speedway
  • Post Office

When: They are scheduled for a 9:30 parade. Arrive between 9/9:15 they are on sheep time and they head out around 9 from the field adjacent to the high school. Sometimes they are at the parade spot in a flash and other times it takes a while.

What to Bring: For littles bring a stroller or a wagon. It is chilly on the way there but then it gets hot so dress in layers and bring a hat/sunscreen

See you there!
